2019-2020 Merit-Based Scholarships

CIS is committed to preparing students to succeed in college and beyond. As part of our commitment, we established the following merit-based scholarships to recognize current and new students at CIS. Applications are due by March 22, 2019, unless otherwise noted below.

CIS offers 10 annual fellowships to students in the Upper School. The merit-based fellowships feature a $2,000 scholarship, a $500 stipend, and the opportunity to create and execute a project related to one of five unique features of the CIS curriculum. Current and new students entering 9th through 12th grade may apply in the spring for fellowships beginning in the fall. As part of the application, the students must propose a research or service project for one of five areas.

  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Fellow

  • World Languages Fellow

  • Arts Fellow

  • Global Perspectives Fellow

  • Service Learning Fellow

The $2,000 scholarship will be in addition to any other scholarships or financial aid the student might be awarded. The $500 stipend may be used to purchase needed materials/supplies, project-related travel, or other project-related expenses. Applications are due by 8:30 a.m. on Friday, April 12, 2019.

All CIS Fellows will present the results of their project during our annual Fellows’ Day celebration. Students can apply annually for the Fellows Award and can either propose a new project or a continuation of a previous project.

The 2019-2020 New Scholars Program offers merit-based scholarships to new students entering CIS in grades 6 through 10 in the amount of $2,000 annually. One scholarship is available per grade. CIS New Scholars possess the following qualities:

  • Intellectual curiosity;

  • Exceptional academic achievement;

  • Commitment to citizenship, both local and global; and

  • High moral character.

The scholarship is in addition to financial aid a family might otherwise receive and is renewable annually as long as the student remains in good standing at CIS.

To be considered for the New Scholars Award, students must apply for admission by March 15, 2019, submit the scholarship application by March 22, 2019, and take the entrance exam on either March 9 or April 6.

Entrance Exam Award

The Entrance Exam Award is a scholarship in the amount of $1,000, given to all new students who score in the 90th percentile or above in at least one section of the entrance exam taken on one of the two exam dates: March 9, 2019, and April 6, 2019. This one-time award does not renew in successive years and is not available to students who take the exam after April 6. Applications are not necessary - the award will be given to all students who qualify.

The Lion’s Scholarship Program was created to award current, highly qualified Columbia Independent School students entering the upper school a merit-based scholarship in the amount of $1,000.
