World Languages
The Modern Foreign Language Department offers courses in Spanish. Course offerings begin in eighth grade and continue through twelfth grade. Completion of level II of any modern language is recommended. For classes above level II, students must have teacher approval. The goal of modern foreign language study is proficiency in speaking, comprehension, reading and writing; therefore, the department strongly recommends the three-year sequence.
Throughout all levels of language study, communication is emphasized. Grammar skills and vocabulary acquisition are stressed to ensure a solid foundation upon which to build more advanced language facility. As the student progresses in the sequence of courses, oral presentations as well as projects with cultural emphasis are undertaken.
Spanish
Spanish I
This course develops a language foundation through focus on basic speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. These will be presented in the context of real-life situations and the development of skills necessary to function in a Spanish-speaking culture. Examples include the ability to order in a restaurant, express likes/dislikes, describe self and family members, and obtain directions in an unfamiliar city. All will be presented in the cultural context with the goal being real-life communication.
Spanish II
Spanish II reinforces skills acquired in Spanish I such as pronunciation, vocabulary, and basic tools of communication. Emphasis is placed on oral communication and development of strong reading and writing skills. A study of Hispanic culture in context continues to be integrated within class lessons. The prerequisite for this course is Spanish I or a placement test determining the appropriate skill level.
Spanish III
Spanish III reinforces skills acquired in Spanish I and II. Emphasis will be placed on the continued development of speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills within a cultural context. Students will also focus on expressing themselves in the past, present and future tenses. There will be increased exposure to the arts, literature and music of the Spanish-speaking world. The prerequisite for this course is Spanish II or a placement test determining the appropriate skill level.
Spanish IV
Spanish IV builds on the foundation developed in Spanish I, II, and III, focusing on an active learning experience to strengthen the students’ language skills and develop their cultural competency. In order to accomplish proficiency in speaking, comprehension, reading and writing, students in Spanish IV are exposed to literature texts and original documents. At this level, students communicate in Spanish at all times and learn how to express their own opinions about different topics such as politics, the environment, and relationships. The prerequisite for this course is Spanish III or a placement test determining the appropriate skill level.
AP Spanish
This course prepares students for the Advanced Placement Spanish Language Exam in May. This advanced placement exam is a multi-skill-oriented exam, which covers the four ability areas developed throughout the studies of Spanish I-IV. The emphasis will continue to be placed on increased accuracy in the receptive skills of listening and reading and the productive skills of speaking and writing. Cultural knowledge and background are also emphasized on this exam.
