CIS Welcomes Dowell as Director of Admissions and Marketing

Columbia Independent School (CIS) recently welcomed Kari Dowell as the school’s director of admissions and marketing. She will be responsible for outreach to prospective students and their families, managing the admissions process, and sharing information about CIS and its mission with the Central Missouri community. Dowell has more than 15 years of professional experience in marketing, including content development, special events, media relations and advertising.

She graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Political Science and holds a certificate in Public Management from MU’s Truman School of Public Affairs. “With her wealth of experience, both as a marketer and a CIS parent, Kari will help us connect prospective students and their families with the CIS community,” said Head of School Adam Dubé. “We are proud to welcome her to the CIS leadership team.”

To get to know Kari a little better, we asked her a few questions:

1. Tell us about your new role at CIS? I am succeeding Jenna Flugum as the director of admissions and marketing. My job is to reach out to prospective students and their families, walk them through the admissions process, and help admitted students get connected to the CIS community. I will also be responsible for managing the CIS brand and sharing all the benefits of this outstanding school with audiences in Central Missouri and beyond.

2. What are you most looking forward to in this new role? I am excited to get to know current CIS students and families and learn what they love most about the school. That information will help tremendously as I promote CIS to prospective families. I also look forward to helping students and families feel comfortable with the admissions process. I know first-hand it can be unnerving, and I want to be as supportive as Jenna was when my family applied last year.

3. How is it being a CIS parent and a staff member? As a working parent, sometimes it’s difficult to sufficiently spread my time, attention and energy between my family and my job. I always felt a little guilty when one pulled me away from the other. But now, I feel more connected to what Leah is learning, what’s going on at school, and with whom she’s spending her day. I’m grateful for this opportunity!

4. What are your hobbies and interests outside of CIS? I’m a huge fan of live music - Roots ‘N Blues is my favorite event in Columbia. I enjoy walking with friends on the local trails, and I follow professional tennis. I’ve never been to a WTA or ATP event, but I need to make that happen before Serena and Roger retire.
