| ART I SYLLABUS The objectives with the 6th grade art class is to teach a strong foundation of drawing skills and ability to see relationships between objects as they are transferred onto paper. The mixing of colors, printmaking techniques, and drawing of narrative art will be explored in this class. Ceramics and masks as well as multicultural holiday ornaments will be our 3-dimentional art projects. Art Concepts: Study The Elements of Art- Line, Space, Form, Color, Value, Texture, and Shape and create a poster using pictorial examples found in magazines. We will also use creative lettering on the poster. These concepts will be referred to for each project we work on this semester. Drawing: An optical illusion will be created using our names on our portfolio cover design. Practice contour and value drawing of objects. Learn to see negative shapes between objects and apply that understanding to drawing a group of objects in proportion to each other. Study Pop Art and draw pop characters using our knowledge of line and value. Our characters will be positioned on an eye popping optical illusion we create. A collaborative project with the English Dept., we will draw narrative art using the stories we hear from professional story teller and mother of Elizabeth Burch-Hudson, Milbre Burch. Her stories, “The Dragon Breathes both Fire and Ice” are exciting and inspiring! Printmaking: Using a soft eraser type material, we will carve animals in their natural habitat and use our block to print several different ways. A Gyotaku print is the ancient form of fish identification but we will use it as an art form! With a real fish and other rubber ones, we will print on beautiful backgrounds we previously painted. Painting: We will practice mixing all colors of the color wheel on our original mandela design which will then be shaped into a kite. 3-Dimentional: A clay rattle is fun to make especially when it is crawling with critters! Multicultural masks will be made from paper mache after students study a chosen culture and prepare a short description on their ceremonial use of masks. Multicultural holiday ornaments will be made to decorate our tree in December! |

| ART III | |
| The Art III class is designed to explore drawing, painting, and sculptural techniques in more depth. We will take many opportunities to visit local galleries to gather inspiration and practice our critical analysis of works of art. Art history will be studied as it relates to the studio project. There will be several independent projects assigned to students throughout the school year. | |
