Media Center
The two CIS Library Media Centers offer a wide variety of resources for our K-12 students from print, to non-print (CD-ROMs, slides, cassettes, videos and laser disks), to technological resources. Our philosophy is to educate students to use both print and non-print resources.
Computers
There is a networked lab of 21 computers in the Upper School Media Center that is available to all CIS students from kindergarten through 12th grade for academic purposes. Internet access, Microsoft Windows XP and Office 2000, the World Book Encyclopedia, EBSCO (access to full text articles from hundreds of periodicals), an online catalog of CIS resources, and links to the Daniel Boone Regional Library (DBRL) and the University of Missouri's Ellis Library, are all available.
Outside Resources and Partnerships
We have a partnership with Ellis Library which allows our students and faculty to check out books when needed. Students must be accompanied by the teacher or the Media Specialist. We also strongly encourage the use of the Daniel Boone Regional Library as an extension to the resources available through the two CIS Media Centers. Field trips to both of these libraries are included as a regular part of the school year.
Print Sources and Reading Programs
All CIS faculty strongly believe in the importance of reading to support the success of our students. Both Lower and Upper School Media Centers house a wide range of fiction and non-fiction reading materials, including magazines. These can be checked out and renewed as often as needed. Even reference materials such as encyclopedias and dictionaries may be checked out for overnight or over-the-weekend usage. All grades are encouraged to participate in the four unique Missouri state-wide reading programs sponsored by the Missouri Association of School Librarians. The Show-Me Program is recommended for grades 1-3; the Mark Twain Program is recommended for grades 4-6; the Truman Readers Award Program is recommended for grades 6-8; the Gateway Program is recommended for grades 9-12. Students all over the state of Missouri vote for their favorite book from among a select reading list. CIS students will vote in March.
